ALFRED TURNER

Alfred F. Turner Sr., 82, of 387 Greylock St. died Saturday morning at home. He was chairman of the Planning Board that wrote Lee's first bylaws and former member and chairman of the Lee School Building Committee. He established the industrial arts department in 1941 at Lee High School, where he taught for 26 years. He was assistant football coach from 1941 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1948, and his football teams were Class B champions in four of those five years. In 1967, Mr. Turner became a registered school psychologist and was appointed guidance director of the Lenox Public Schools. He retired in 1978. Born in Lee on Feb. 25, 1918, son of Abbott A. and Inez Willis Turner, he was a 1936 graduate of Lee High School. He earned his bachelor of science degree in education from Fitchburg State College in 1940 and his master's degree in education from the former North Adams State College in 1955. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He also taught industrial arts at David Prout High School in Spencer from 1940 to 1941. Mr. Turner was associated with L.V. Toole Agency as a real estate agent and broker from 1955 to 1963 and, later, with Fox Modular Homes and Roberts & Flint Realty Co. He also worked at the Lee Senior Center for several years, assisting seniors with medical problems and driving them to doctors' appointments or to the hospital. He was president of the Berkshire County Teachers' Association and the first president of the Berkshire County Guidance Association. From 1946 to 1947, he was commander of American Legion Post 157. Mr. Turner also served on the committee to write the bylaws for the Police Department. He was a Little League coach when his sons were young and enjoyed playing golf. He was a recent shuffleboard tournament player in Florida, where he spent winter months after retirement. Mr. Turner was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and a member of Greenock Country Club. His wife, the former Mary E. Owens, whom he married Nov. 20, 1941, died Aug. 18, 1992. He leaves four sons, Alfred F. Turner of Nashua, N.H., Richard A. Turner of Housatonic, and Donald T. Turner and William J. Turner, both of Pittsfield; four daughters, Margaret M. Roussin of Hinsdale, Lynn A. McCain of Hickory, N.C., Gail N. Turner of New London, Conn., and Mary E. Turner of Lee; a sister, Hazel Jordan of Amityville, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral for Alfred F. Turner Sr. will be Thursday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery in Lee. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St. Lee, MA 01238. He was predeceased by a grandchild, two sisters and five brothers.
