Norman Schulze

Norman Dwight Schulze, 92, of 55 Marion Ave. died yesterday morning at home. Born in Quincy on Aug. 9, 1909, son of Henry H. and Edna Herrick Schulze, he attended grammar school in Quincy before moving to Bethlehem, Pa., with his family. He attended the former Bethlehem Preparatory School until it closed in 1927, then transferred to Bethlehem High School, graduating with the class of 1927. He returned to Quincy after graduation and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a bachelor's degree in engineering. Mr. Schulze was employed as a corporate plant engineer for the former Sprague Electric Co. at its plants worldwide from 1947 until retiring in 1984. Before that, he worked for Atlantic Simpson Bethlehem Steel Co. in the ship building and repair yards in Quincy. He was a longtime member of First Congregational Church and a member of Lafayette Greylock AF&M Lodge of Masons and the Shriners' club. He was the chairman of the North Adams Redevelopment Authority for several years and served on the board of trustees at North Adams Regional Hospital for several years. His wife, the former Ragna Marie Christensen, whom he married Nov. 27, 1937 in Quincy, died Dec. 2, 1997. He leaves two daughters, Meredith S. Farley of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Jane R. Gille of San Jose, Calif.; a son, Richard Dwight Schulze of Rochester, Vt.; a sister, Evelyn Kilbourn of Quincy; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. His brother, Walter Schulze, predeceased him. Memorial services will be conducted Saturday at 1 at First Congregational Church of North Adams by the Rev. Jill Graham, pastor of First Congregational Church of North Adams. Burial will take place at a later date in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnatti, Ohio. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for the Eileen Barrett Oncology Center at North Adams Regional Hospital or to the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation through FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, which is in charge of arrangements.
