Paul Cherney

Paul Cherney, 94, died Monday morning at Kimball Farms in Lenox. Born in Budpest, Hungary, sone of Adele Kohn-Cola and Edward Cserneyei, he grew up in Vienna, where he received his education and played semi-professional ice hockey. He came to the United States in 1929. He was president and founder of Cinefot International, a photographic import-export management business in New York City until his retirement in 1987. A major in the United States Air Force during World War II, he was stationed in London as a principal prisoner of war interrogator with the Combined Intelligence Objectives subcommittee of the Royal Air Force. President Emeritus of the National Association of Exporting Companies, in 1972 he received the coveted E award from the United States Department of Commerce for Excellence in promoting American exports. An avid tennis player, he also enjoyed traveling and philately. His first wife, Clare Rubin dies in 1944. He leaves his wife, Phyllis Brighten Cherney of Lenox, and four daughters, Elizabeth Gordon of Sebastool, CA; Sara Evans of New York City; Geraldine McElroy of Davidson, NC; and Michelle Gillett of Stockbridge; ten grandchildren and three great-granchildren. A memorial service will be at the time to be announced at a later date. There are no calling hours. Hickey-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South STreet, Great Barrington, MA is in charge of arrangements.
