Walter C. Zepka

Walter C. Zepka, 87, of 16 Grandview Terrace, longtime Adams businessman and town official, died Sunday afternoon at home. Born in Adams on May 5, 1914, son of John and Aniela Ptak Zepka, he attended the former Adams High School. Mr. Zepka and his brother Matthew J. Zepka owned J. Zepka & Sons Florists and Nurseries, which was founded by their father in 1909 on Victory Street. He was active in the business until semi-retiring last year. Active in town affairs, he was a member of the Adams Cemetery Commission from March 1952 until retiring in March 1997. He was a town meeting member from 1944 until 1999, and was an active member of the Adams Republican Town Committee. He was a former member of the advisory board and board of trustees of the former Berkshire Bank & Trust Co. and of the Adams Chamber of Commerce He was a communicant of St. Stanislaus' Church and a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society, the Polish National Alliance and the St. Michael's Society. He also was a member of the Adams Lodge of Elks and the former East Side Citizens Club, and was director and business manager of the former PNA Scarlet Raiders Drum Corps. A beekeeper, he enjoyed coin collecting and raising tropical fish. He and his wife, the former Helen E. Gollon, celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary Oct. 26. They were married in All Saints' Church in Housatonic. Besides his wife and his brother, of Cheshire, he leaves a son, David J. Zepka of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Diana J. Margolis of North Miami, Fla.; another brother, Albert F. Zepka of Wethersfield, Conn.; a sister, Mary Battory of Adams; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Helena Ryczek, and a brother, John Zepka. The funeral will be held Thursday at 9 from AUGE-PACIOREK-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Adams, by the Rev. John C. Chwalek, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Stanislaus' Church or to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of Northern Berkshire, which provided hospice care to Mr. Zepka, through the funeral home.
