James McMahon

James F. McMahon, 84, of Westfield died Tuesday at Laurel Lake Center, where he had resided since August. Born in Westfield on June 13, 1917, son of Thomas and Mary Ellen Donovan McMahon, he attended Westfield High School. Upon retiring, Mr. McMahon resided in Venice, Fla., and Monterey. Mr. McMahon was employed with American Airlines as a flight radio operator. During World War II, he served in the Air Transport Command. After the war, Mr. McMahon was employed with the radio station WSPR in Springfield, and in 1952 joined the newly formed WWLP Channel 22 television station, where he became assistant chief engineer. He was most recently employed with Townsend Broadcast Systems of Westfield, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed sailing and constructed a sailboat of his own design. His wife of 61 years, the former, Rita Marcouliier, died in July. He leaves four sons, Robert McMahon of Otis, Wayne McMahon of Erlanger, Ky., Ronald McMahon of Monterey, and Jeffrey McMahon of Great Barrington; a daughter, Nancy McMahon of Middleboro; a sister, Dorothy Nardacci of Westfield; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday at 8:15 from FIRTION-ADAMS FUNERAL HOME, 76 Broad St., Westfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church at 9:15 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Westfield.
