Melford C. Peck, 95

Melford Clarence Peck, 95 of Clarksburg, MA passed away on Saturday December 3, 2022 after a brief stay at Williamstown Commons with his family by his side. Melford was born in Clarksburg on June 23, 1927, a son of Clarence and Myrtle (Bliss) Peck.

Melford was a life long resident of Clarksburg and attended Clarksburg schools. He was a decorated World War II veteran of the US Navy. He received the World War II Victory Medal, and the Asian Pacific Theatre Medal. He was a member of the Post 125 American Legion and the VFW of North Adams.

Melford married the former Jacqueline Ann Miller in North Adams, MA on September 2, 1950. She predeceased him on April 18, 2001.

Melford was a Supervisor of Maintenance at Sprague Electric where he retired from after 38 years. He was also the historian of the Sprague factory buildings, as he knew those buildings inside and out.

Melford played the drums in a local band, enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing in his younger years. He loved the outdoors and cut and split wood for his wood stove up until he was 92. He was always known as the “Handy Man” of Clarksburg, as he could fix anything and would help anyone in need. He lived in the house that he built in 1963 right up until a few weeks ago. His best days were spent with his two great granddaughters, Raegan and Everly.

Melford is survived by his two sons; Daniel C. Peck (Mary Beth) of North Adams and David G. Peck (Trudy) of Clarksburg. He also leaves five grandchildren; Katie Mason (Scott), Jenna Martone (Anthony), Devon Peck, Kayla Palen, Kerri Morrison and five great-grandchildren including Raegan Grace Mason and Everly Rose Martone. He also leaves nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife Jacqueline, two brothers; Arlton and Newton, as well as four sisters; Violet, Evelyn, Eileen, Hazel and his mother-in-law Mildred Miller whom he cared for until her death.

 

Graveside services with full military honors will take place in the spring at the convenience of the family in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, MA.

I was occasionally assigned to work with Mel as part of my summer job in the ‘60’s at Spragues. He was truly an artistic genius, designing and building all sorts of equipment and structures. Gentle, kind, smart, and creative, I learned so much from him.
