Elizabeth A. Chesbro, 71

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. —
Mrs. Elizabeth A. (Young) Chesbro, 71, died on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at her home. Born in North Adams on July 11, 1953, Liz was the daughter of the late William and Blanche (Boyer) Young. She attended schools in Williamstown and graduated from Mt. Greylock High School in 1971. She then went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree from the former North Adams State College in 1975. After a career in hospitality, she retired in 2016. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Chesbro, Esq., whom she met in 1977 and married on June 22, 1984; her stepson Robert V. Chesbro of Lambertville, NJ; her half-sister Linda Boyer King of Georgia; her niece Kim Murphy, and several cousins. She also leaves behind a loyal circle of friends and her beloved basset hounds Annabelle and Georgie Mae.
Liz was a descendant of the south Williamstown Young's, one of the oldest families in Williamstown. Her grandfather, Dow Young, had a dairy farm on Green River Road and gifted his son, Willie, a prime piece of real estate on Stone Hill with a perfect view of Mount Greylock and the Hopper. With the first building permit ever issued by the town of Williamstown in hand, Willie built his home. Liz grew up in this house and lived in it for most of her life. She eventually spent her final days in view of her grandfather’s old farmland.
Liz had an extraordinary work ethic. She financed her college career with a job at the former Springs Restaurant in New Ashford. For the next 29 years, she worked at the original Purple Pub, starting out as a bartender and eventually managing the business until 2007. Liz had a way with people that made everyone feel welcome. Some would say Liz is the reason they ever went to the Pub, and she knew nearly every person who walked in the door. Liz ended her career with stints at Waubeeka Golf Links and the former Mingo’s in North Adams. She retired in 2016, and finally had plenty of time to enjoy floating in her pool and looking at her beloved view.
Liz was talented and versatile. She became an accomplished silversmith and co-owned a jewelry store in North Adams. She created a line of dog treats, developing it into a business. She was an adept markswoman. She was a test audience for her husband, a nationally recognized magician, who would develop new tricks under her critical eye. She learned to golf and walked three miles a day. She created gorgeous perennial gardens around her house, tending them all summer long. She was a gifted homemaker, decorating her home for every holiday. Her Halloween decorations had no equal. A self-taught expert cook and baker, Liz would bake cookies, pies, stroganoff, and homemade pizzas for friends and guests.
Liz was a beautiful and loyal person to all who knew her. She was frequently called upon to help out her elderly neighbors and did so with grace and humor. She had many lifelong friends who loved visiting her and Bob in their oasis on Stone Hill. She was a loving stepmother to Rob. She was a steadfast and loving wife and partner for nearly 50 years. They will all miss her dearly.
Per Liz’s request, there are no funeral services. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center and Hospice Care in the Berkshires, especially Debbie and Natalie.
