Dorothy Howe, 91

STAMFORD, Vt. —  Dorothy Thompson Howe, 91, of Stamford, Vermont, died peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vermont. She had resided for several months at the Vermont Veterans Home. She was born in New Sharon, Maine, the daughter of Merle and Hazel (Brown) Thompson.

Dorothy graduated from New Sharon High School in 1952 and from the Central Maine General (now Central Maine Medical Center) School of Nursing in 1955. She worked as a hospital nurse at CMG for several years before marrying David and moving to the Berkshires. In 1964, she and David moved to Stamford, Vermont and became outstanding members of the community.

In the 1980s, Dorothy worked as a nurse at North Adams State College (now MCLA) where she tended to student ailments and provided a listening ear to those in need. Her nursing care was also extended to friends and family facing serious illnesses. She was a steadfast friend to many and could always be counted on for practical support as well as a loaf of freshly baked bread. Her baking was a gift and a comfort to all.

Dorothy was involved in many activities and rarely sat still. Those who knew her often saw her walking along Main Road and up The Lane. She would always wave and stop to chat with everyone she met—and carry biscuits for any dogs she might encounter along the way. She was a gifted correspondent and loved to send cards and letters to all she held dear. She will be deeply missed.

She was predeceased by her husband, David Howe. Dorothy is survived by her children, Jean, John, and Jim and his wife Cathy; her five grandchildren, Emily and her husband Giuseppe, Molly, Colleen, Joshua and his late husband Ryan, and Natalie; and her great-grandson, Giuseppe.

FUNERAL NOTICE:
A graveside service for Dorothy Howe will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Millard Cemetery in Stamford, Vermont. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department, care of Flynn & Dagnoli Funeral Home, 74 Marshall Street, North Adams, MA 01247. Condolenses to all family. Memories of Dave & Dottie run deep ever since I was a young boy running around Stamford and especially seeing them every Saturday on trash day. One of the kindest people and family I have ever met even to today. Stamford needs more Dave and Dottie Howes today.

We were just talking about the lovely Howe family recently. Dottie and David were very kind and curious and even though it had been a very long time since I have seen them they left a lasting impression on me

I'm so sorry for the loss of this amazing woman! I met her in 2021 when I was living with family on Henry Hill while recovering from severe sepsis and was just beginning to venture out to walk on the flat area between the church and school. She was so warm, kind, welcoming, and encouraging! As I improved enough to be driving and later to move into my own space again I would often see her walking and would stop for a few words. She was such an inspiration! I will never forget her. I hope her family and those who were close with her will find comfort in the memories they created together.

Once in a lifetime you will meet people so genuine and kind. That was Dottie and David. They reflect what we all should keep in our hearts and daily actions; friendship, a helping hand and sprinkle in some light-hearted humor. So very sorry to the Howe family for their loss. With Sympathy,
Cindy & Rob Lamore

Dottie truly was such a sweet, kind, and just a wonderful woman. She had a beautiful smile. I loved seeing her walk around town wearing her flourecent safety vest and always a quick wave as I would toot my horn when driving by. We shared a birthdate and ALWAYS sent cards to each other. I loved that woman. I will miss her.

She was the best neighbor ever. Always a pleasure to see and talk to. Our dog Bud loves to see her every day. If we didn’t put him out on the porch there was always a dog treat waiting for him. I will miss our conversation and seeing her walking by every day. Rest easy my friend. You will be missed. My condolences to her entire family.
