Richard Marden

Richard Gibbs Marden, 92, of Topsham, Maine, died Monday at Midcoast Memorial Hospital in Brunswick, Maine. He was the father of Alan L. Marden, president of the North Adams City Council. Born in Worcester on Sept. 4, 1909, son of Leslie E. and Lillian Grimes Marden, he was a 1931 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester. He received a master's degree in education from Boston University. He was commissioned a lieutenant junior grade in the Navy in 1942, and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He served at the U.S. Naval Reserve midshipman school, the U.S. naval base at Leyte, the Philippines, and as the Naval Reserve commanding officer at Elmira, N.Y. He retired as a commander in the Naval Reserve in 1964. He was chairman of the science department at Worcester Classical High School for 32 years and at Falmouth (Maine) High School for eight years. He was a resident of South Freeport for 21 years and moved to Topsham in 1992. Mr. Marden was a member of the South Freeport Congregational Church and the Harraseeket Yacht Club. His wife, the former June Florence Parker, whom he married April 9, 1932, died July 1985. Besides his son, he leaves another son, Parker G. Marden of North Manchester, Ind., president of Manchester College; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held at the LINDQUIST FUNERAL HOME, Yarmouth, Maine. Interment will be in the South Freeport Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Manchester College, North Manchester, IN 46962.
