Francis C. Lis

Francis C. "Butch" Lis, 84, of 431 Monterey Road, formerly of Housatonic, died yesterday at Fairview Commons. Born in Great Barrington on June 19, 1918, son of Joseph and Virginia Zdun Lis, he attended local schools, including the former Searles High School. He joined the Navy during his senior year in high school and was a veteran of World War II. While in the Navy, he learned to be a chef. With his wife, the former Clara A. Spadaccini, Mr. Lis owned, managed and was a chef at many area restaurants, including the former Canteen on Meadow Street, which was the basis for Norman Rockwell's "The Runaway." He also was head chef at the Barrington House, owner and chef of the Mountain View Restaurant from 1970 to 1974, a chef at the West Stockbridge Truck Stop, and, most recently, chef at the Polish American Club in Housatonic since 1974. He retired in July 2001. He was a gold member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8183. He enjoyed playing golf. His wife, whom he married Aug. 27, 1949, in Corpus Christi Church, died Nov. 28, 1996. He leaves a son, Richard C. Lis of Housatonic; three daughters, Linda C. Lis and Patricia L. Jaquins, both of Great Barrington, and Pamela L. Barquinero of Milford, Conn.; two sisters, Sophie Woitkowski of Pittsfield and Sadie Smith of Lee, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow, June 22, at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 in Corpus Christi Church by the Rev. Anthony Jutt, pastor. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery. Family will receive friends, today, June 21, from 4 to 7. Expressions of sympathy in Mr. Lis' memory may be made to the Corpus Christi Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
