Walter Bronson Jr.

Walter Michael Bronson Jr., 77, of 56 Liberty St. died Saturday at home. Born in North Adams on June 7, 1925, son of Walter M. and Helen Griffin Bronson, he graduated from the former St. Joseph's High School in 1942 and from Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., in 1950. He completed the master's degree program in economics at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. An Army veteran of World War II, he served from 1943 to 1946 as a technical sergeant with the 1086th Engineer Depot Company and participated in the battles of Rome, Arno and the Northern Apennines. He was awarded several medals, including a distinguished unit badge for being an expert rifleman and second-class gunner. Mr. Bronson worked as a civilian employee with the U.S.government in Boston for a short time. He then returned to North Adams and was employed by GE in Pittsfield as a computer programmer for more than 30 years, retiring in 1985. As a young man, he was employed in sales. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Francis' Church and a member of the GE Quarter Century and Retirees' clubs, the General Electric Athletic Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 996. After his retirement, he was a longtime volunteer, assisting the elderly with their income tax preparation. He also trained volunteers to help complete tax forms and volunteered at the Council on Aging at the Mary Spitzer Center. He leaves several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by two sisters, Rita Bronson Allard in 1968 and Mary Bronson Horrigan in 1981. The funeral will be Thursday, Aug. 1, at 10 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial in the Griffin family plot at Park Lawn Cemetery, Bennington, Vt. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday, Aug. 1, for one hour before the funeral. Omission of flowers.
