Joseph A. Guerrieri

Joseph A. Guerrieri, 93, of Baker Street died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Stockbridge on Dec. 16, 1908, son of Antonio and Anna Maria d'Andrea Guerrieri, he was a 1927 graduate of the former Williams High School. He received a degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1931. During the Depression, he first worked in various jobs, including surveying, across the United States. With the inception of World War II, he worked on building Liberty Ships. Following the war, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked for Northrup Aircraft Co., designing the electrical systems for B-52 bombers. He went to San Francisco in 1963 and worked for Bechtel Corp. to head their electrical design department for the construction and the Bay Area Rapid Transit system that links San Francisco with the East Bay and South Peninsula areas. He retired in the late 1970s. After retirement, he and his late sister, Mary C. Heather of Stockbridge, acquired the long-unused power plant of the former Monument Mills in Stockbridge with a plan to return it to power production. The old power plant was renovated and updated, and it began producing power in the mid-1980s. His wife of 56 years, the former Alberta Nygren, whom he married in San Francisco, died March 14. He leaves a daughter, Marilyn Woodruff of Flemington, Mo.; a stepdaughter, Helen Louise Wilson of Camarillo, Calif., and a sister, Sister Antonia Maria Guerrieri of the Maryknoll Sisters Convent of Maryknoll, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Joseph Alexander Guerrieri died Sept. 19, 2002. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Helen Louise Wilson. He was predeceased by his brothers, Salvatore A., A. George and Mario A. Guerrieri and his sisters, Mary C. Heather, and Mother Dora Guerrieri of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be conducted Friday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Steven McGuigan, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
