John E. Hewitt

John E. Hewitt, 81, of 568 River Road died yesterday morning at the Williamstown Commons in Williamstown. Death followed a long illness. Born in Clarksburg on April 1, 1921, son of Frank and Fanny Brockway Hewitt, he attended schools in Clarksburg. A Marine Corps World War II veteran, he served in the Asiatic Pacific as a private and machine gun crewman. After his military career, he was employed at the Gordon & Sutton Construction Co. for several years. He was later employed at the Sterling & Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown and at the Yankee Atomic Power Plant in Rowe as a security guard for Pinkerton Security Co. He was last employed for many years at Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, retiring in 1983. Mr. Hewitt was a former constable for the town of Clarksburg and a former member of the Berkshire County Sheriffs Association. He was a 51-year member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion in North Adams. He enjoyed bowling and participated in several of the leagues at Mount Greylock Bowl in North Adams. He also enjoyed golfing and was a member of the early morning Wet League at the Stamford Valley Country Club in Stamford, Vt. He leaves his wife of 55 years, the former Nellie Morin, whom he married Nov. 1, 1947, in St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams; a daughter, Sandra Shank of Clarksburg; a son, Frank R. Hewitt of Lunenberg; a brother, Sterling Hewitt of North Adams; a sister, Frances Johnson of Thomaston, Conn., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for John E. Hewitt will take place Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, with the Rev. Mr. Robert Moulton, deacon of the Parish of Notre Dame and St. Thomas in Adams, officiating. Burial with military honors will take place in the springtime in the family plot in Clarksburg Cemetery, Clarksburg. Calling hours at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, are today, Friday, from 6 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations are suggested for North Adams Adult Day Center or to the Western Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association through the funeral home. Survivors include: a son-in-law, Randy Shank; a daughter-in-law, Sarah Hardman Hewitt; four grandchildren, Jessica Shank, Frank Hewitt, Hannah Hewitt and Christopher Shank. He was predeceased by a brother, Frank V. Hewitt, who was killed in Italy during World War II.
