George Noah Payne

George Noah Payne, 89, formerly of Mount Washington, died Sunday, April 27, at Noble Horizons Nursing Home in Salisbury, Conn. He served as a selectman from 1983 to 1986. Born in Oakland, Calif., on Oct. 11, 1913, son of Frank and Maud Foley Payne, he graduated from Glendale (Calif.) High School in 1932, the Los Angeles School of Fine Arts in 1933 and the Chicago Art School in 1934. He resided in Ossining, N.Y., from 1952 until moving to Mount Washington in 1975. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines as a third mate from 1942 to 1945 in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Caribbean and Indian Ocean. Mr. Payne was employed as an advertising art director and graphic designer for advertising agencies and retail businesses from 1934 to 1942. He worked for Grey Advertising Agency, owned a commercial art studio in the 1940s and ‘50s, and was an advertising consultant to the American Bureau of Shipping, all in New York City. He retired in 1996. His paintings and illustrations have been displayed at the Chicago Art Institute, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Society of Illustrators and the Salmagundi Club, both in New York, the Air Force Art Collection, the Sheffield Art League, the Kent (Conn.) Art Association, and in private collections and other venues. His interests included reading, music and the outdoors. He and his wife, the former Jean Rose, were married in September 1944. She died April 26, 1975. He leaves his son, Robert Payne of Mount Washington, with whom he resided. FUNERAL NOTICE -- For expressions of sympathy in Mr. Payne’s memory, donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. A memorial service for George Noah Payne, who died April 27, 2003, will be held at a later date to be announced. There will be no calling hours. A burial at the convenience of family will be held in Crossroads Cemetery on Mount Washington. Also surviving are a cousin, Dick Brown of Olathe, Colo., and a sister-in-law, Gertrude Rose of Cleveland.
