William Macmillan

William Macmillan, 90, of 85 Eagle St. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Oct. 12. Born in Pittsfield on Dec. 29, 1912, son of Gordon S. and Alison R. Peden Macmillan, he graduated from the former Williamstown High School in 1933. He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, serving as a cook and baker. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in the Battle of Salerno in Italy. Mr. Macmillan was a chef at Williams College for more than 25 years, retiring in 1978. Before that, he worked at Neville's Donut Shop. His earliest baking job was at the former Renton's Bakery on Holden Street, where he worked both before and after the war. Until 1935, between high school and his bakery jobs, he drove a taxi in Williamstown for Town Taxi and Walter Gigliotti in North Adams. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 996 and American Legion Post 125. He and his wife, the former Eleanor Sweet of North Adams, were married June 16, 1944, in Atlantic City, N.J.; a daughter, Kathryn Saltamartini of North Adams; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for William Macmillan will be Monday, Oct. 20, at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., with the Rev. Edward King, rector of St. John's Church, officiating. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Drury High School athletics department in care of the funeral home. Survivors include four grandchildren, John M. Saltamartini of East Hampstead, N.H., Dianne Supranowicz of Cheshire, Susan Saltamartini of Essex Junction, Vt., and Karen Boyer of North Adams; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Gordon Macmillan; his sister, Alison Tucker, and his son-in-law, Joseph Saltamartini.
