Frederick Allen Bowman

Frederick Allen Bowman, 72, of 37 South St. died yesterday at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, where he was admitted Oct. 1. Born in North Adams on April 25, 1931, son of Elihu Major Bowman and Alice Porter Bowman Wright, he was a 1949 graduate of Drury High School. He enlisted in the Navy in 1949 and attained the grade of missile technician first class after 20 years of active duty. He then transferred to the fleet Naval Reserve, where he served an additional 10 years. While serving aboard the U.S.S. Carmack DMS-33 during the Korean War, he was awarded the Korean Campaign Medal and two Battle Stars. He also served two tours on the U.S.S. George Washington submarine. He had an honorable discharge in 1970. Following his discharge, he returned to North Adams and worked at GE Naval Ordnance Division in Pittsfield for a few years. Mr. Bowman was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in North Adams. He was a life member of the Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 VFW, where he served as trustee and a past Seam Squirrel of Pup Tent 31 Military Order of Cooties. He was an avid bowler and also enjoyed playing cribbage at the North Adams Elks Club. He leaves a daughter, Dollise Howard of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Mary Hart of Williamstown; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services to celebrate the life of Frederick Allen Bowman will take place Sunday at 2:30 at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, with the Rev. Edward King, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial with full military honors will take place in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown, in the spring. Calling hours will be Sunday from 12:30 to 2:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Vermont Veterans Home through the funeral home, 521 West Main St., North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors include two grandchildren and one great-grandchild, a brother-in-law, James Y. Hart; a nephew, Stephen M. Hart; a niece, Laura Hart-Brown and her husband, Thomas; a grandnephew, Travon Brown, and several cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Elihu Major Brown, and a nephew, James Y. Hart Jr., who died Dec. 25, 2000.
