Evelyn Dietrich

Evelyn Dietrich, 88, of 4 Goodrich St. died Monday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 29, 1915, daughter of Paul and Sophia Matoska Krajchy, she was educated there. She moved to Stockbridge in 1957 and to Goodrich Street in 1968. Mrs. Dietrich had been a buyer of women's accessories in New York City and New Jersey for Macy's, Bamgerger's and Gimbels. During World War II, she worked in Oak Ridge, Tenn., as a buyer. Primarily a homemaker, she rented apartments and operated a successful Oriental antiques business, Taggart House. One tenant, the late playwright William Inge, used her as the model for a character in one of his plays. While in New York, she frequently starred in local theatrical productions, most notably in song and dance routines. Mrs. Dietrich was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. She enjoyed gardening, photography, shopping and driving the "Red Baron," her 1995 red Mustang. In her youth, she was a volunteer for many causes. She enjoyed taking cruises, particularly to South America and Cuba. Her husband, James H. Dietrich, whom she married Feb. 15, 1947, in St. Gregory's Church in Brooklyn, died Oct. 2, 1984. They had also lived in Menands, and Schenectady, both in New York, before moving to Stockbridge. She leaves two daughters, Dr. Kathleen A. Dietrich, with whom she resided, and Karen D. Campetti of Sandisfield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Evelyn Dietrich of Stockbridge, who died Dec. 22, 2003, will be private. There will be no calling hours. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Oct. 2, 1984, and by her siblings: John Walter Krajchy, Charles Krachy, Annette McKenna and Irene Altman. Another brother, Henry, died in infancy. She also leaves two nephews, Charles Krachy of Garrison, N.Y., and Chuck Dietrich of Belmont, and two nieces, Sharon Guzzi of Montrose, N.Y., and Suzanne Dietrich of Edwardsville, Ill.
