Mildred H. Fennell

Mildred H. Fennell, 75, of Hartsville-New Marlboro Road died last evening at home. She had suffered a severe stroke in April. Born in Somerville on Aug. 11, 1928, daughter of George W. and Mildred G. Furbush Thibeault, she attended parochial schools there. She earned a bachelor's degree in 1949 from Salem State College and a master's degree in 1956 from Boston State College. She taught Grade 5 in North Adams from 1949 to 1951 and in Arlington from 1951 to 1956. She left teaching when she married in 1956. She served two terms as a School Committee representative for New Marlboro in the 1970s. She was vice chairperson and in 1975 helped to raise $8,000 to refurbish the playground at the New Marlboro Central School. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Mill River and taught CCD for 15 years. She enjoyed embroidery, doing crossword puzzles, gardening and reading. She was also active in politics. She and her husband, William J. Fennell, were married April 14, 1956. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Patrick J. Fennell of Great Barrington, William J. Fennell III of Acton and Stephen G. Fennell of Niantic, Conn.; four daughters, Joan M. Stillman of New Berlin, N.Y., Mary H. Iandoli of Bedford, Carol A. Stec of Braintree and Alice M. Naylor of Sheffield; a brother, George Thibeault of San Jose, Calif., and 10 grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mildred Fennell will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield with the Rev. John Lis, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. Memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
