Phyllis C. Bona

Phyllis C. Bona, 87, of 805 River Road died Friday at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown, where she had resided for a number of years. Born in New Britain, Conn., on March 31, 1916, daughter of George W. and Ida May Radcliffe Carson, she moved to Clarksburg as a child and attended schools there. She graduated from Drury High School in North Adams in 1932. She enlisted in the Army on Sept. 1, 1943, and served in the Women's Army Corps in North Africa and Naples, Italy, during World War II. She attained the rank of sergeant and received several medals. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Mrs. Bona was last employed at the Eagleton School in Great Barrington for more than 10 years. Before that, she had been employed in the office of Krutiak Wood Products, and assisted her nephew, David "Kit" Carson, with the operation of Carson's Saw Mill until it was sold. She also had been employed by the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, the city of North Adams and the former Strong-Hewat Woolen Mills. She was a member of Stamford (Vt.) Community Church, and a former den leader for Cub Scout Pack 62. She was a charter member of the Stamford (Vt.) Valley Grange and helped build its Grange Hall in 1941. She and her husband, John B. Bona, were married April 27, 1946, in North Adams. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Bruce J. Bona of New Marlboro and John G. Bona of New Hartford, Conn.; a sister, Phoebe Dennett of Williamstown, and five grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services to celebrate the life of Phyllis Carson Bona will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 11 at Stamford (Vt.) Community Church by the Rev. William Wilson, pastor. Burial will take place with military honors in the spring in the family plot in Clarksburg. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 Main St., North Adams, will be Tuesday from 4 to 7. Memorial donations are suggested for the Davis Wing at Sweet Brook Care Centers, the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department or to the charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home. Survivors include five grandchildren, Kira O'Neil Bona, Jesse O'Neil Bona, Justin Bona, Nathan Bona and Riley Bona; a sister-in-law, Adeline Carson; two daughters-in-law, Patti Bona and Susan, several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, William Carson and George Carson, and a sister, Ida May Carson.
