August Francis "Gus" Wandrei II

August Francis "Gus" Wandrei II, 75, of 32 Park St. died Friday at North Adams Regional Hospital after a long illness. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 10, 1928, son of August F. Wandrei Sr. and Lillian Poupart-Wandrei, he attended schools there until his family moved to Adams, where he graduated from the former Adams High School in 1946. An Army veteran, he enlisted at the start of the Korean War and served in Germany as a technician in a medical unit. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as a private first class with the 172nd Infantry Regiment. Mr. Wandrei was employed by General Cable in Williamstown, retiring in 1994. Before that, he was a clerk with the former Adams Super Market. When he got out of the service, he worked for his father in the operation of a waste disposal company. He enjoyed camping, taking his morning coffee at McDonald's and watching passers-by from his doorstep on Park Street. His wife, the former Phyllis J. Dalton, whom he married Jan. 2, 1954, died Oct. 7, 1993. He leaves a son, August F. Wandrei III of Turners Falls; two daughters, Patricia A. Martin and Michelle Wandrei of Port Lucey, Fla.; three brothers, Dennis W. Wandrei, Norman R. Wandrei and Leonard R. Wandrei, all of Adams; three sisters, Bernice Giroux and Rosalie Randall, both of Adams, and Dianne Biagini of Cheshire, and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly Bedard. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private family service will be held for August F. Wandrei, who died Jan. 30, 2004, at McBRIDE FUNERAL HOME. His cremains will be inurned in the family plot in Bellevue Cemetery next to his wife, Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the cause of the donor's choice. Survivors include his son-in-law, Richard Martin, and five grandchildren, Justin, Corey, Amanda, Ricky and A.J. He also was predeceased by a sister, Carol Ann Wandrei, and a brother, Richard Wandrei. Gus took great joy in being a devoted father and grandfather. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed by his family.
