Donald Dewey Tanner

Donald Dewey Tanner, 81, of 27 Watson St. died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Feb. 2. Born in North Adams on Oct. 30, 1922, son of Dewey S. and Beatrice A. Moore Tanner, he was raised in Stamford, Vt., and attended elementary school there, and graduated in 1940 from Drury High School. He moved to North Adams in 1955. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater. Mr. Tanner was employed by GE in Pittsfield for 46 years, including 35 years as a foreman in the transformer and arresters departments. He retired in 1986. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and played on several local baseball and softball teams in his younger years. He was a longtime member of the Waubeeka Golf Links in Williamstown, and a member of the Retired Men's Club bowling league. He and his wife, the former Janice R. Russett, would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary April 16. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Michael Tanner of Takoma Park, Md.; a daughter, Barbara Wallace of Medway; a sister, Norma Delisle of North Adams and a grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Donald D. Tanner, who died Feb. 14, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 10 from AUGÉ-SAN SOUCIE-SIMONS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Robert Moulton, permanent deacon of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas in Adams. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Eileen Barrett Foundation through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247. Survivors include a grandson, Andrew Wallace of Medway, and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Eleanor Mattingly of Crystal River, Fla., and Beatrice Tisdale of Wichita Falls, Texas, are deceased.
