Casimer Jacob Wiater Sr

Casimer Jacob Wiater Sr., 87, of 66 Depot St. died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center. He had resided in Cheshire for most of his life prior to moving to Pittsfield, where he lived with his son, Stephen D. Wiater, at 63 Beverly St. for the past five years. Born in Cheshire on June 4, 1916, son of Jacob and Katherine Kolis Wiater, he attended St. Stanislaus Kostka School in Adams. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served with the Seabees in the South Pacific. He was last employed with GE defense systems for 16 years, retiring in 1986 as a wire and assembly specialist. Prior to working for GE, he had worked for over 30 years at the former Indian Head Textile Mills in North Adams as a foreman in quality and design. He was a comunicant of St. Mary the Assumption Church. He was a member of the Cheshire Rod and Gun Club and had served as its past president. He was a member of the Adams Turners and a member of the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society of Adams. As an enthusiastic outdoorsman, he enjoyed trout fishing and gardening, as well as cooking, carpentry, plumbing and electrical work. His wife, the former Pauline T. Labanowski, whom he married Aug. 9, 1941, died Jan. 15, 1999. Besides his son of Pittsfield, he leaves a daughter, Janice Wiater Hartwell of Hooksett, N.H.; two other sons, Casimer J. Wiater Jr. of Peru and Paul N. Wiater of Chicopee Falls; a brother, Aphonse Wiater of Cheshire; three sisters, Alice Wiater, Theresa Lepine and Cecelia Bissaillon, all of Cheshire, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Casimer J. Wiater Sr., who died March 4, 2004, will be Tuesday at 8:45 from the DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary the Assumption Church in Cheshire. Burial will be in the spring in Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Berkshire County Association for Retarded Citizens in care of the funeral home. Mr. Wiater is survived by his adored grandchildren, Douglas and his wife Helen Hartwell, Kimberly Hartwell, Kelly and Erin Wiater; his daughters-in-law, Susan J. and Kathleen R. Wiater. He also leaves his beloved dog, Duchess. He was predeceased by a brother, Chester Wiater; two sisters, Emily Tanguay and Monica Czerwinski, and by his son-in-law, Allan D. Hartwell.
