Herman G. Morelli

Herman G. Morelli, 85, of 28 Gilmore Ave., and a winter resident of Venice, Fla., died Friday at Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial Hospital. He was a former chairman of the Board of Selectmen. Born in Great Barrington on March 2, 1919, son of John and Valentina Brignoli Morelli, he was a 1937 graduate of the former Searles High School. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served three years in the South Pacific with the 33rd Seabee Division at Peleliu. An electrical contractor, Mr. Morelli owned Barrington Electric from 1946 until retiring in 1976. He was a communicant of St. Peter's Church, a fourth-degree member of Bishop Conaty Assembly, and a member and past grand knight and former district deputy of Mount Everett Council 513 Knights of Columbus. He was a life member and past post commander of James A. Modolo VFW Post 8348 and a life member and vice commander of American Legion Southern Berkshire Post 127. He was a member of the Great Barrington Police Association, a deputy sheriff of Berkshire County and past president of the Wyantenuck Country Club. He was also a Yankees fan. His first wife, the former Theresa Oschman, whom he married April 30, 1945, in St. Peter's Church, died Oct. 22, 1996. He and his wife, Jean Mahan Sturgeon, were married Oct. 29, 1999, in Corpus Christi Church. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Maryann Theresa Davidson of Alford and Jane Morelli Johnson of Aspen, Colo.; a brother, Joseph Morelli of the state of Florida; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Herman G. Morelli, who died Friday, March 12, 2004, will be Wednesday, March 17, at 10 from BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 at St. Peter's Church celebrated by the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, MIC. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow, March 16, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. He leaves his grandchildren, Edward Davidson, Jennifer Brownson, Amy Jaeger, and Elizabeth, Sarah, Michael and Caroline Johnson, and six great-grandsons, Joseph, Andrew and Brandon Decker, Myles Brownson, Kyle Williamson and Aiden Davidson.
