Lewis M. Smith Jr

Lewis M. Smith Jr., 82, of 3 Whitcomb Hill Road died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Thursday. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., on Feb. 11, 1922, son of Lewis M. Smith Sr. and Vivian Wilson Smith, he was a 1939 graduate of Amherst Central High School in Snyder, N.Y. He also graduated in the top fifth of his class, with a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering, in 1943 from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He was elected to Phi Eta Sigma and Tau Beta Pi Engineering fraternities there. He earned his bachelor of law degree in 1952 from Georgetown University Law School, graduating in the top third of his class. He had resided in Sterling for 26 years and moved to Florida in 1985. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served three years of active duty and 17 years with the Naval Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant commander. Mr. Smith was employed as a patent attorney for 23 years by Norton Co. in Worcester, retiring in 1982. He began his career as a structural modifications engineer for the Navy Department and later worked in the U.S. Patent Office until 1951. He was admitted to the bar of the District of Columbia in 1951 and, in 1952, admitted to practice in the U.S. Patent Office. He also was admitted to practice before the Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia, the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, the District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. From 1951 to 1955, he was a patent adviser in the Bureau of Aeronautics Office of Naval Research and, in 1955, he was appointed patent counsel at the Naval Air Development Center in Johnsville, Pa. He was a member and deacon of First Church of Sterling. He and his wife, the former A. "Sue" Goudelias, would have celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on March 23. They were married in Silver Spring, Md. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Leslie Ann Bordonaro of Boston and Karen Lee Soderberg of Rutland, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Lewis M. Smith Jr., who died March 13, 2004, will take place tomorrow, March 15, at 11:30 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.The Rev. Susan Stewart, pastor of First United Methodist Church of North Adams, will officiate. Burial will take place later in Eastlawn Cemetery, Williamstown. There will be no calling hours.
