George C. Potter

George C. Potter, 91, of 163 Bull Hill Road died Sunday at home. Born in Pittsfield on March 2, 1913, son of William and Mary Dougharty Potter, he attended local schools. A decorated Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific theater as a gunner's mate, second class. He also served in the Army from 1937 to 1939, and in the Army Reserves until 1941. He was also a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, serving from 1965 until 1967 after he was recalled as a member of the Navy Reserve. Mr. Potter was a self-employed carpenter, and also worked as a caretaker on several Berkshire County estates for many years, retiring in the early 1970s. During the 1930s, he had worked in Panama and Alaska as a demolitions expert. His wife, the former Dorothy Miner, whom he married Oct. 4, 1940, died Dec. 4, 1998. He leaves his niece and caregiver, Marianne Parise, with whom he resided, and a sister, Martha Maxwell of Pittsfield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Mr. George C. Potter died April 25, 2004, in Lanesboro at the home of his niece, Marianne Parise. He leaves many other nieces and nephews, including Sandy Vidal Lucas and Patricia Baker, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, William, James and Harry Potter, and three sisters, May Potter, Ella Dermody and Florence St. James. The time and location of the memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of DWYER FUNERAL HOME.
