Eugene Leo Hannon III

Eugene Leo Hannon III, 70, of West Avenue died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. He was a former vice president and loan officer at Great Barrington Savings Bank and its successor, Berkshire Bank. Born in Pittsfield on April 14, 1934, son of Eugene L. Hannon Jr. and Elise Zwicker Hannon, he was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from American International College, and his juris doctor in law from Western New England Law School in 1976. He also graduated from the Omega Lending School and took courses at the State University of the New York at Albany. He enlisted in the Navy during the Korean War and served in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. Mr. Hannon began his banking career with Valley Bank and Trust Co. in Springfield, rising to the assistant vice president before being elected vice president of consumer credit at Old Colony Bank in Holyoke. Two years later, he was named director of the loan department at First National Bank of Highland, N.Y. He returned to the Berkshires in 1985 as vice president of First Agricultural Bank, managing commercial lending and new business development out of its Great Barrington office. He joined Great Barrington Savings in 1989 as vice president of retail lending. He taught classes at the American Institute of Banking for many years. After retiring, he had worked at the Catamount Ski Area for several years as director of marketing and operations. Mr. Hannon was involved in a number of community organizations, including as past president and treasurer of the South Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, and a past member and president of the Great Barrington Rotary Club. He served on the board of the Berkshire United Way for several years and on the Berkshire Latino American Council, which helped organize the Latino Festival that has been part of the Lee Founders' Day. He also had been chairman of the Southern Berkshire chapter of the American Heart Association, and an officer with the Berkshire Visitors' Bureau. He leaves his former wife, Maureen Smith Hannon of Egremont; two stepsons, Clayton Havens and Jared Havens, both of Egremont, and a sister, Nancy Hannon Murphy of Boston. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Eugene "Gene" L. Hannon, 70, died Wednesday, April 28, 2004. A service of remembrance will be conducted Sunday at 3 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME with the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 until the time of the service at the funeral home.
