John Joseph Masiero

John Joseph Masiero, 91, of Cobb Road died yesterday at Laurel Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lee. Born at home in West Stockbridge on Oct. 25, 1912, son of Rinaldo and Angela Zenere Masiero, he attended West Stockbridge Village School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in England preparing for the D-Day invasion, until ill health forced him to leave the service. From age 12, he worked in the family business, Masiero's Variety Store, which was founded in 1915. He operated the store from the 1940s until the 1960s, when one of his sisters bought the business. She sold it in 1982. Mr. Masiero was appointed a county deputy sheriff in 1955, a post he held for more than 30 years. He served civil papers and, at times, was a court officer and jail guard during his tenure. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. He was a charter member and past commander of Joseph A. Lombardi Post 254 American Legion. He also was a past president of the Berkshire County Deputy Sheriff's Association. He and his wife, the former Frances Eddy, were married March 2, 1946, in Burlington, Vt. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John J. Masiero Jr. of West Stockbridge; a brother, Joseph A. Masiero of Albany, N.Y., and a granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for John J. Masiero, who died June 27, 2004, will be at a time to be announced. Military burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. He also is survived by his daughter-in-law, Ada, and a granddaughter, Claudia Colombari.
