Mildred D. Steinberg

Mildred D. Steinberg, 82, of Prospect Street died early yesterday morning at Fairview Hospital after a 40-year battle with multiple sclerosis. Born in Greenfield on Nov. 30, 1921, daughter of Max and Florence Bissell Gans, she moved to Great Barrington as a young girl and was a graduate of the former Searles High School. She also attended Framingham State Teachers' College. During World War II, she volunteered as a nurses' aide in New Jersey, where her husband was stationed. After returning to Great Barrington in 1943, she volunteered as a nurses' aide at Fairview Hospital. She also worked at the former Larkin's Market on Railroad Street. While in New Jersey, she worked for Nathan's Department Store. Mrs. Steinberg was a member of Ahavath Sholom Synagogue and Haddasah. She and her husband, Irving Steinberg, were married June 24, 1942, in Springfield. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Howard J. Steinberg and Lawrence G. Steinberg, both of Great Barrington; a daughter, Rasha Benigno of Great Barrington; a sister, Lois M. Papo of Denver, and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Mildred D. Steinberg will be conducted Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at 1:30 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington by professor Sheldon Rothberg, former spiritual leader of the Congregation of Ahavath Sholom. Burial will follow in Ahavath Sholom Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Those who desire may make memorial donations to Fairview Hospital through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
