Edmund T. Mack

Edmund T. Mack, 81, of Springfield died Thursday at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He was the father of Carol Mack of Lenox. Born in Springfield on Aug. 12, 1923, son of George F. and Mary Murphy Mack, he graduated from the former Springfield Technical High School and received his bachelor of arts degree from American International College in Springfield and his master's and certificate of advanced graduate studies from the University of Connecticut. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. An educator, Mr. Mack began teaching in Connecticut. In 1953, he joined the Springfield School System. He worked as a math teacher, a guidance counselor and as an assistant principal, retiring in 1986. He also worked summers as director of YMCA Camp Nendowan in New York state for many years. He was a member of Springfield Lodge of Elks 61, the Country Club of Wilbraham, the Springfield and Western Massachusetts principals' associations, a board member of the 16 Acres Civic Association and a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Springfield. A golfer, he played almost every day at the Country Club of Wilbraham and was a fan of the New England Patriots and the Red Sox. His wife, the former Marjorie L. Leger, died in 2003. Besides his daughter, he leaves two other daughters, Margaret Amster of Brookline and Theresa Russell of Springfield; seven grandchildren, and his friend and caregiver, Ellie McCrae. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at 11 at St. Patrick's Church, Allen Street, Springfield, with Rites of Committal to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Springfield. His family will receive friends from 10 until the start of the Mass, at the church and at the Country Club of Wilbraham following the committal services. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be directed to Reach for the Stars, 63 Birchwood Lane, Lenox, MA 01240, which will benefit orphaned children, in honor of his grandchildren, or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Sampson's Chapel of the Acres. He leaves two sons-in-law, Richard Amster of Brookline and Dennis Carty of Lenox; seven grandchildren, Maximillian and Alexander Amster, Lyndsey and John Russell, and Ryan, Olya and Sergei Carty, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, George McAnanama , and two sisters, Mary O'Malley and Margaret Machia.
