Wilma Ethel Durfey Wheeler

Wilma Ethel Durfey Wheeler, 86, of 98 East Main St. died yesterday morning at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington. Born in Wilmington, Vt., on April 21, 1918, daughter of William and Viola Chase Bird, she attended schools in Jacksonville and in Readsboro, including the former Readsboro High School. During World War II, Mrs. Wheeler worked at the former Sprague Electric and Wall Streeter Shoe companies in North Adams, Mass. She was employed in the cafeteria of Readsboro Elementary School until her retirement. Before that, she worked at the former Readsboro Chair Factory for several years. She was a member of Readsboro Baptist Church and of its choir. She enjoyed crocheting, fly-fishing and reading. Her husband, Warner W. Wheeler, whom she married Dec. 19, 1945, died Dec. 26, 2003. She leaves three sons, Ronald E. Durfey of West Chesterfield, N.H., Robert E. Durfey of Jacksonville and William W. Wheeler of Readsboro, with whom she made her home; a sister, Minola Allen of Brattleboro; a brother, Francis Bird of Jacksonville; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Graveside services for Wilma Durfey Wheeler will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at 11 at the family lot in Village Cemetery in Readsboro, Vt., by the Rev. John Brigham, pastor of Readsboro Baptist Church. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Readsboro Baptist Church or to the American Lung Association, both in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
