Mildred C. Porter

Mildred C. Porter, 81, of 22 Country Road died Sunday afternoon at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Pittsfield on June 29, 1923, daughter of Russell and Josephine Wagner Collins, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. She lived in Windsor for 35 years and in Prospect, Maine, from 1995 to March 2002, when she moved to Hinsdale. Mrs. Porter was employed as a waitress at the former Ann's Mahogany Room and at the former Edmar Cafe in Dalton. She retired in 1985. During World War II, she was employed by GE. She was a founding member and former president of the Windsor Council on Aging, and a founding member of the Windsor Fire Department Auxiliary, serving as its president for 10 years. She was the first woman to run for selectman in Windsor. She and her husband, Richard F. Porter, would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary Nov. 17. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Clifton P. Bean of Pittsfield and Warren R. Bean of Jamaica, Vt.; a stepson, Richard C. Porter of Cocoa, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy Smith of Virginia Beach, Va.; 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mildred C. Porter, who died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, will be tomorrow, Nov. 3, at 8:15 from DERY-FOLEY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Agnes' Church celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Nov. 2, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Porter may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
