Raymond James Darling

Raymond James Darling, 85, of 144 Bradley St. died yesterday at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington, where he was admitted in June. Born in Springfield on June 2, 1919, son of Howard and Christine Cain Darling, he moved to Adams, where he attended elementary schools, and was a 1939 graduate of Drury High School. He resided in Williamstown from 1978 to 1990. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Darling was employed by Massachusetts Electric Co. as a line engineer, retiring in 1984 after 30 years of service. He also worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. and at the former Studebaker dealership. He attended Our Lady of Mercy Church and was a member of Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion and the American Federation of Musicians. He played for several local bands in his younger years, including the Trudeau Band and the Modernaires Quintet. His wife, the former Genevieve L. Therrien, whom he married June 16, 1942, died June 26, 1997. He leaves a daughter, Judith A. Lepel, with whom he made his home; a sister, Dorothy C. Messier of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Raymond J. Darling will be Thursday, Dec. 2, at 9 from AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Our Lady of Mercy Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Drury High School Band through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., 01247. He also leaves two grandchildren, Christine Barton and her husband, Christopher, of North Adams, and Jon P. Lepel and his wife, Jennifer, of Burnt Hills, N.Y.
