Dr. Elliot Marshall Goldberg

Dr. Elliot Marshall Goldberg, 74, of 2 Independence Place, Philadelphia, formerly of North Adams, died Thursday at home. He was an author, media personality and social activist. Born in North Adams on Dec. 18, 1930, son of Alexander "Jack" and Ida Lenhoff Goldberg, he was a 1948 graduate of Drury High School. He also graduated from the University of Rochester, where he majored in chemistry, and studied medicine at Tufts Medical School, completing his residency at Worcester Medical Hospital. He served in the ArmyMedical Corps at NATO Headquarters in France for two years. Dr. Goldberg specialized in endocrinology and performed research on diabetes, obesity and other endocrine conditions. In 1986, he was named a full professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. He had been director of medical education at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Mich., for 20 years before moving to Philadelphia. During the 1960s, he worked closely with Charles Evers, brother of the late Medgar Evers, to establish the first medical clinic in Fayette, Miss. The clinic was staffed by medical interns and residents from Hurley Hospital. For Dr. Goldber's service, he was awarded the NAACP Humanitarian Award. Using "Marshall Goldberg" as a pseudonym, he began writing scripts for the "Dr. Kildare" television show, and went on to write 18 medical novels, including "Critical List," which was made into a television movie. He also wrote educational works of nonfiction, including "Cell Wars." He won numerous awards for teaching, including Medical Educator of the Year at Jefferson Medical School. He served on the boards of numerous institutions, including the Wistar and the Gallo institutes. While a resident of North Adams, he was a member of Congregation Beth Israel. He leaves two sons, Brett Goldberg of Greenwich, Conn., and Jeff Goldberg of Atlanta; two daughters, Carey Goldberg of Cambridge and Dara Cohen of Louisville, Ky., and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dr. Elliot Marshall Goldberg, who died Jan. 20, 2005, will take place Wednesday, Jan. 26, at noon at Congregation Beth Israel, 53 Lois St., North Adams, with Rabbi Jeffrey Goldwasser, spiritual leader, officiating. Burial will follow in Beth Israel Cemetery, Walker Street, Clarksburg. There will be no calling hours. The omission of flowers is requested. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Eve Goldberg; son-in-law, Michael Cohen; grandchildren, Isa Goldberg, Liliana Goldberg and Tully Goldberg; niece, Mira and Leo Mastroianni; nephew, Marc and Diane White, and grandniece, Lea Fay White. He was predeceased by his sisters Cecile Pamela White on Oct. 13, 2004, and Dr. Toby Goldberg on Aug. 27, 1984.
