Nunzio Paul "Nino" DeVanna

Nunzio Paul "Nino" DeVanna, 69, of East Granby, Conn., formerly of Pittsfield, died Thursday at home. He was born in Pittsfield on June 20, 1935, the son of Francesco and Angela Amendoligne DeVanna. After graduating from Pittsfield High School, he was employed by General Electric and Sears & Roebuck. From 1954-57, he served in the Air Force as a jet mechanic. After he was honorably discharged, he attended East Coast Aerotechnical school. He was employed by Launderwell Inc. for 17 years, traveling the East Coast. In 1978, he relocated to Connecticut and after 22 years with Mac-Gray he retired in 1999. He had a distinguished career with Maytag and Speed-Queen and received the Serviceman of the Year Award several times. He continued to consult until his death. One of his passions was restoring automobiles. He belonged to the Model A Ford Club of Western Mass., the Pontiac-Oakland Club and The National Corvette Museum. In 1997, his 1964 Pontiac GTO convertible won the national title in Buffalo, N.Y. He attended St. Bernard's Church in Tariffville, Conn., and was an ecumenical minister as well as small Christian group participant. On Jan. 10, 1959, he married the former Louise Rushbrook Rathbun. Besides his wife of 46 years, he leaves two daughters, Susan DeVanna of East Granby, Conn., and Nancy DeVanna-Miller of Simsbury, Conn.; a son, Paul Francisco DeVanna of New Britain, Conn.; a sister, Pauline Vedovelli of Southwick, and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A funeral service will be held Monday, Feb. 14, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, Maple Avenue, Tariffville. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. His family will receive friends on Sunday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 7 at HAYES-HULING & CARMON FUNERAL HOME, 364 Salmon Brook St., Granby, Conn. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Nino may be made to The Farmington Valley ARC, P.O. Box 1099, 225 Commerce Drive, Canton, CT 06019.
