Richard Armstrong

Richard Armstrong, 74, of 22 Daniels Terrace died Thursday morning at Berkshire Medical Center. He was chief of police in Cheshire from 1984 to 1992. Born in North Adams on April 28, 1930, son of Ralph and Emma Carrie Armstrong, he was a graduate of Drury High School. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served from Sept. 14, 1948, to June 26, 1952, and was discharged as a corporal. Mr. Armstrong was employed by GE as a draftsman, and worked as a car salesman for 12 years and as a truck manager for Bedard Brothers during the mid-1970s. He joined the Cheshire Police Department in 1980, retiring in 1997. He was a member of First Baptist Church, the Masons, the Order of Eastern Star, the Cheshire Lions Club and the National Rifle Association. A certified firearms instructor with the Massachusetts State Police, he taught a safety course. He also was head of the civil defense scuba diving team during the 1960s. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his wife, the former Eileen Reilley, were married May 9, 1958. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Debra Juif and Laurie Scott, both of Adams; a sister, Ellen Drummond of Largo, Fla., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of the life of Richard Armstrong will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 at First Baptist Church of Cheshire, led by the Rev. Linda M. Shaw, pastor, and the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of Berkshire Union Chapel. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Armstrong may be made to the Eileen Barrett Breast Cancer Center at North Adams Regional Hospital. DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
