Anthony Gulotta

Anthony Gulotta, 87, of 29 Frederick Lane died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in New York City on Nov. 7, 1917, son of Francesco and Margherita Sargent Gulotta, he attended schools there and graduated in 1931 from the barber school at Columbia College. He moved to Sheffield in 1932 and had formerly resided at 175 Miller Ave. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a tracking radar operator. Mr. Gulotta and his brother, the late Leonard Gulotta, operated Gulotta Brothers' Barber Shop from 1969 until he retired in 1988. He opened his first barber shop in Ashley Falls from 1932 until entering the service in 1942. He also was a special police officer and longtime constable. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church and a Eucharistic minister, visiting area nursing homes and leading the rosary before daily Masses. He was a member of Mount Everett Knights of Columbus Council 513 and of American Legion Post 340, from which he received recognition as a 50-year member in 1997. A fan of the New York Yankees and Giants, he enjoyed manicuring his lawn and playing checkers at the barber shop. His wife, the former Joan L. Cane, whom he married Aug. 24, 1941, in Our Lady of the Valley Church, died March 3, 2003. He leaves three sons, Peter Gulotta of Turners Falls, Michael Gulotta of Sheffield and Vincent Gulotta of Harwich; a daughter, Antoinette Gulotta of Sheffield; a sister, Lucy Carasone of Sheffield, and two granddaughters. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Anthony Gulotta, who died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, will be Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 9 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of the Valley Church by the Rev. John S. Lis, pastor. Burial will follow in Our Lady of the Valley Cemetery. Family will receive friends tomorrow, Feb. 22, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Anthony's memory may be made to Our Lady of the Valley Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Katherine of Harwich; a brother-in-law, Charles Cane of Great Barrington; two sisters-in-law, Veronica of Salisbury, Conn., and Lovina of Sheffield, and two granddaughters, Amy and Kara. He was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph, Santi and Leonard Gulotta; and a sister, Mary Gulotta Ward.
