The Rev. Charles T. Brown

The Rev. Charles T. Brown, 92, a native of Stockbridge, died Sunday at Hawthorne House in Freeport, Maine, where he had resided for a year. Born Nov. 21, 1912, son of Willie C. and Edith Janes Brown, he was raised in the Williamsville section of town and graduated from the former Williams High School and, in 1940, from Bowdoin College. He also graduated from Bangor (Maine) Theological Seminary. He was ordained June 17, 1941, in Housatonic Congregational Church. An Army Air Force veteran of World War II, he served as a chaplain and was stationed at bases in Arizona, New Mexico and South Dakota from 1943 to 1945. He was honorably discharged as a captain. The Rev. Brown was a minister for more than 60 years, retiring at age 87. He served at Stockbridge Congregational Church from 1954 to 1957, and in churches in Portage, Woolwich, Monmouth, Bucksport, Thorndike, Searsport and Sandy Point, all in Maine. He was a founder and the first president of the Bucksport Historical Society; an honorary life member of the Sandy Point American Legion post and a former member of the Monmouth Grange. He also was an officer of the Waldo-Hancock Ministers Association for many years. He enjoyed writing religious articles and, as an avid bird watcher, bird-related stories. He wrote a column on birding, "Seen Through the Binoculars," for the Bucksport Free Press for many years. He was interested in the environment and enjoyed organic gardening and raising chickens. He also enjoyed trains and trolleys. He leaves his wife of 62 years, the former Mary Flanders; a son, the Rev. Kendall Brown of Evansville, Ind.; two daughters, Sharon Brown and Deborah Betit, both of Brunswick, Maine; a sister, Elizabeth Butler of Oneida, Tenn., and three grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The Rev. Charles T. Brown, 92, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, in Freeport, Maine. The funeral will be held Thursday at 2 at Monmouth United Methodist Church, Main Street, Monmouth, Maine. Visiting hours at BRAGDON-FINLEY FUNERAL HOME, 707 Main St., Monmouth, will be Wednesday from 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sandy Point Community Church, Box 21, Sandy Point, Maine 04972 or Elm Street Congregational Church, Box 878, Bucksport, Maine 04410. Messages of condolence may be sent to bfinleyfh@adelphia.net. He also leaves a son-in-law, Paul Betit; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl; grandchildren Hannah Brown of Berkeley, Calif., Charles J. Betit and his wife, Laura, and Christopher Betit, all of Brunswick; a brother-in-law, Ellis Butler; sisters-in-law, Miss Eleanor Flanders and Mrs. Mildred Flanders, both of Monmouth, and Mrs. Christine Brown of Pittsfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Perry C. Brown in 1968, and a brother-in-law, Earle Flanders.
