Norma Claire Shatan

Norma Claire Shatan, 73, of 415 Central Park West, New York City, died yesterday at home after a four-year battle with cancer. She also was a resident of the Beachwood section of Stockbridge. Born in Flushing, N.Y., on July 18, 1932, daughter of Irving and Renee Green Altstedter, she studied art history at Goucher College in Baltimore and received her master's degree in fine arts from Columbia University in 1983. A lifelong resident of New York City, she traveled extensively, especially in France and Italy. She enjoyed jazz, skiing and playing tennis. Her love of skiing took a professional turn some 15 years ago when she became a ski instructor at Butternut Basin. A talented artist, she founded Prince Street Gallery, one of New York City's oldest cooperative galleries, with a group of figurative painters in 1970. Her 13th solo exhibition, Changing Moods: 30 Years of Flowers, was held in October 2004. Her husband, Dr. Chaim Felix Shatan, is deceased. She leaves two sons, Gregory Samuel Shatan and Jeremy Daniel Irving Shatan, both of New York City; two daughters, Gabrielle Rebecca Shatan of New York City and Jessica Anne Heslin of Yonkers, N.Y.; a sister, Joan Joseph of Los Angeles, and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Norma Altstedter Shatan will be Thursday at 11:45 at "The Riverside" 76th St. & Amsterdam Ave., New York City. Shiva at her home, 415 Central Park West, Apt. 11A, New York City, from 5 to 9, 1 to 5 on Sunday, through Tuesday. She leaves her two daughters-in-law, Deborah Elkind and Karen Capucilli; two sons-in-law, Seymour Pardo and Terence Heslin. Norma was also a loving grandmother to Nicholas, Maximilian, David, Sarah, Jacob (who predeceasesd her), Hannah and Noah. Norma's vivacity and gift for conversation attracted a wide circle of friends. All who knew Norma will miss the warmth and brightness she brought to their lives and choose to remember her getting that last run in after the lifts had closed, experiencing the fullness of the life she enjoyed so much.
