Jacob "Jack" Pevzner

Jacob "Jack" Pevzner, 83, of South Street and Lakeworth, Fla., died Friday evening at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston after a brief illness. In 1954, Mr. Pevzner and his wife, the former Mildred Cohen, opened the former Jack's Department Store in Lee. In 1970, together with their son, David Pevzner, they opened Jack's Country Squire on Main Street in Great Barrington. Upon Mr. Pevzner's retirement in 1994, the business passed to his son. Born in Roselle, N.J., on Dec. 2, 1921, son of Harry and Eva Penziner Pevzner, he was a 1940 graduate of Roselle High School. He moved to Great Barrington in 1947. An Army veteran of World War II, he received several campaign medals and was honorably discharged on March 8, 1946. From 1940 to 1942, he was a meat cutter for the former Levine Beef Wholesaler. After the war, he was a traveling peddler, selling clothes to area farmers. He was a member of Cincinnatus Lodge and Hevreh of Southern Berkshire, and a former member of Ahavath Sholom Synagogue. He and his wife were married Feb. 3, 1946, in Roxbury. Besides his wife and son, of Great Barrington, he leaves three daughters, Lynne Kaplan of Chevy Chase, Md., Paula Pevzner of New York City and Dr. Holly Schneider of Newton; a sister, Minna Cohen of Elizabeth, N.J.; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Jacob "Jack" Pevzner will be conducted Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 11 at FINNERTY AND STEVENS Funeral Home by Rabbi Andrew Klein. Burial will follow in Ahavath Sholom Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Printing House for the Blind or to the American Breast Cancer Foundation through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Survivors include grandchildren Daniel, Lisa, Amy and Matt Pevzner, Rachel and Ben Kaplan, Aaron Greenwald, and Marcus and Andrew Schneider, and great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Victoria Pevzner. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Lillian Mont of Los Angeles.

Hi Holly, So sorry to hear about your Dad passing away. I still remember when we met at a campground somewhere here in the Berkshires. Your Dad and my Dad knew each other. We were from W. Stockbridge, MA. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family.
