Joan Kennedy Taylor

Joan Kennedy Taylor, 78, of New York City and Stockbridge died Saturday at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York. Born in New York City on Dec. 21, 1926, daughter of music critic and radio personality Deems Taylor and actress and poet Mary Kennedy, she completed her first eight grades of school in eight locations, including New York, Paris and Peking, China. She attended St. Timothy's School in Stevenson, Md. While a student at Barnard College in the 1940s, she worked as an actress in radio dramas. During the 1950s, Miss Taylor was an actress in various live television series, including "Mama." In the late 1950s, she worked in the publicity department of Alfred A. Knopf publishing house. During the presidential campaign of 1964, she helped found the Metropolitan Young Republican Club of New York and served as editor of the group's newsletter, which became the political magazine Persuasion. In the mid-1980s, she was editor of The Freeman magazine. During the 1980s, she was a regular commentator on the nationally syndicated daily radio program "Byline." A freelance writer, she wrote for such publications as the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times. She was the author of "Reclaiming the Mainstream: Individualist Feminism Rediscovered"and "What to Do When You Don't Want to Call the Cops: A Non-Adversarial Approach to Sexual Harassment." She also produced "The Lysistrata Affair," a musical based on the play by Aristophanes, which ran off-Broadway. She leaves a son, Michael Cook of New York City. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Joan Kennedy Taylor, who died Saturday at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, will be conducted Friday, Nov. 4, at 3 at First Congregational Church by the Rev. Lois F. Rose. Burial will follow in Stockbridge Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee.
