Louis P. Schmitz Jr.

Louis P. Schmitz Jr., 83, formerly of Route 183 in Interlaken, died Sunday at the Veteran's Hospital in Albany, N.Y. He had lived in Nassau, N.Y., for the last two years. Born on Dec. 29, 1922, he was the son of Louis P. and Veronica Matuchak Schmitz. He graduated from local schools and later attended Yale and McGill universities. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Schmitz enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1946. He married the former Margaret Cone on Oct. 13, 1951, in St. Joseph's Church in Pittsfield. The couple made their home in Connecticut where Mr. Schmitz worked as an engineer at Pratt & Whitney until retiring in 1979. They moved to Interlaken in the early 1980s. Mr. Schmitz attended the Marion Fathers. He loved learning the history of local areas and collected antiques. He had an inquisitive mind and enjoyed taking things apart, seeing how they worked and later putting them back together. He cherished the time spent with his friends and family. He leaves his two sons, Peter M. Schmitz of Nassau, and Kevin E. Schmitz of Great Barrington; a daughter, Mary Alison Walton of Topeka, Kansas; two brothers, Robert Schmitz of Phoenix, and Jerry Schmitz of Milwaukee, and two sisters, Patricia Clemens, also of Milwaukee, and Betty Pillow of Surprise, Okla.; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, who died in 1982, along with two sisters and two brothers. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for the late Louis P. Schmitz Jr. will be held on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, conducted by Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Pittsfield. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, from 5 to 7 p.m. at FINNERTY AND STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Patrick and Margaret Schmitz and Brenda Davis, along with his great-granddaughter, Taylor Davis.
