Arthur H. Brown

Arthur H. Brown, 92, of 135 Orchard St., died yesterday at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Cranston, R.I., on Aug. 15, 1913, he was the son of Arthur and Laura Harrop Brown. He graduated from Cranston High School in 1932 and attended various business, laundry and dry cleaning schools in Boston. He was a graduate of the Ohio Mechanics Institute in Cincinnati. Mr. Brown was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran serving in Germany, Belgium, France and Great Britain. Initially, he was trained as a glider pilot and was later transferred to the air traffic controller division. As a captain in the 29th Tactical Control Group, he was awarded the Belgian Fourragere Meritorious Service Plaque and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He was a member of the Maine Masonic Order in Portland, Maine, for over 50 years. As a founding member of the Adams Ambulance Service, he served on the board of directors and was a past president of the Adams Chamber of Commerce and the Adams Lions Club. Mr. Brown was a director of the New England Laundry Managers Association and a member of the Toastmasters and Textile Rental Service Association. He enjoyed renovating and maintaining his home, the former Browne Homestead on Orchard Street, and was an accomplished horseman. An avid yachtsman, he moored his boat in Westerly, R.I., and was a member of the Westerly Yacht Club. He was a communicant of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. His wife, the former Sylvia L. Bragg, whom he married on July 26, 1941, in the Church of the Ascension in Cranston, R.I., died July 1, 1996. He leaves a son, Stephen D. Brown of Adams; a daughter, Sandra L. Holzer of Adams; a brother, Gordon Brown of Arizona, and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Arthur H. Brown, who died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, will take place Thursday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. at the TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, 6 Summer St., Adams, with the Rev. Edward King of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Thursday from 10 until 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams. Donations in his memory can be made to the Adams Ambulance Service or the Shriners Hospital through the funeral home. He also leaves his son-in-law, Thomas F. Holzer, and daughter-in-law, Jane A. Brown, both of Adams; and four grandchildren, Kimberly Holzer of Charlottesville, Va., Michael Holzer of Seattle, Wash., Wendy Brown of Wilmington, Vt., and Jeffrey Brown of Savoy. A daughter, Karen Brown, died in infancy.
