Gerald Liebert

Gerald Liebert, 79, of the Windflower Inn on South Egremont Road died Sunday at Fairview Commons Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in New York on Dec. 20, 1926, son of Samuel and Mena Mendell Liebert, he attended Bronx High School of Science and graduated from George Washington High School. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1946, then attended New York State College of Forestry and Syracuse University. After the service, he moved to Nassau County, where he lived for 25 years. Mr. Liebert and his wife, the former Barbara Marin, moved to Chittenden, Vt., in 1975 and opened the Tulip Tree Inn. In 1980, they moved to Great Barrington and opened the Windflower Inn with their daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and John Ryan. He enjoyed woodworking, plumbing, electrical projects, building and fixing things, and painting landscapes. He was interested in history and archaeology and visited many ancient sites in Europe. He and his wife were married Oct. 8, 1950. Besides his wife and daughter, of Great Barrington, he leaves two sons, W. Scott Liebert of Needham and Daniel Liebert of Salem; a brother, Martin Liebert of Granite Bay, Calif., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Gerald Liebert will be today, March 7, at 1 at Hevreh of South Berkshire, conducted by Rabbi Deborah Zecher and Rabbi Andrew Klein. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no calling hours. Syrvivors also include four grandchildren, Rachael, Samuel, Jessica and Michael, and a daughter-in-law Nancy Rottman-Liebert. Among his many talents and pleasures, he enjoyed telling stories to his grandchildren and cooking gourmet meals for his dogs. He bought 62 acres of land in the Catskills in the late 1950s, where he built a cabin that he and his family and friends visited over the years. Gerry loved to talk and meet new people, which served him well during his career as a salesman and then as an innkeeper.
