Alice Hempel

Alice Hempel, 78, of Englewood, Fla., formerly of Dalton, died Feb. 25 at Venice Regional Medical Center in Venice, Fla., after a 20-year battle with breast cancer. Born in Passaic, N.J., on Dec. 29, 1927, daughter of Joseph and Sophie Jarosz Gall, she grew up in Clifton, N.J., and graduated from Clifton High School. She lived in Clifton until 1953, when she moved to Dalton with her husband, Milton A. Hempel. Mrs. Hempel co-owned and operated the former Dairy Queen in Pittsfield and the former Berkshire Brush, a wholesale evergreen business. After retiring to Florida in 1983, Mrs. Hempel was active in the South Venice Yacht Club, and in 2000 served as its first woman commodore. She was active in the "Even Keels," the women's division of the South Venice Yacht Club, and served on numerous committees. Besides her husband of 59 years, she leaves two daughters, Judith Viner of Hinsdale and Robin Berry of Venice, Fla.; two sisters, Joan Thielen of Warrington, Pa., and Dorothy Oliemuller of Englewood; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A celebration of life for Alice Hempel, who died Saturday, February 25, 2006, was held Sunday, March 5, at 2 p.m. at the South Venice Yacht Club, 4425 Yacht Club Drive, Venice, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Venice Yacht Club, 1147 Poinciana Road, Venice, FL 34293. Mrs. Hempel also leaves four grandchildren, Jennifer Hewitt, Jeffrey Viner, and Kayla and Dylan Berry, and two great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Jacob Hewitt.
