Lawrence E. Stannard

Lawrence E. Stannard, 102, formerly of Maple Street in the Risingdale section of Great Barrington, died yesterday at Fairview Commons. Born in Chester on May 9, 1899, son of Ernest and Bertha Woods Stannard, he attended schools there. He had resided in Great Barrington since 1934. He was a World War I Army veteran and received the French Order of the Legion of Honor medal, France's highest honor, which was created by Napoleon, for his military service in Europe during the war. He served in France and Belgium from 1918 to 1919 with the 14th Engineers, Company D, of the First Army Corps. He was incorporated into the headquarters staff when the colonel found out that he was fluent in German. Mr. Stannard was employed as a brakeman, fireman and engineer for the Boston & Albany Railroad for 14 years. From 1933 until 1969, he worked at the former Rising Paper Mill, now Fox River Paper Co., as a machine tender, retiring in 1969. He was a member of the South County Barracks 2255 of the American Legion, and the Adams-Budz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8183. His wife, the former Valerie Dempsey, whom he married in 1923, in Huntington, died Dec. 13, 1979. He leaves a son, L. Elliott Stannard of Great Barrington; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Corpus Christi Church, with the Rev. Anthony Jutt, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass. HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, is in charge of arrangements. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to Corpus Christi Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
