Elizabeth A. Peck

Elizabeth A. Peck, 92, of 115 Egremont Plain Road, died Tuesday at home. Born in Springfield on Feb. 22, 1914, daughter of Jeremiah P. and Elizabeth R. May Enright, she was a 1931 graduate of Cathedral High School, where she was a member of the drama and debate clubs. She was a 1936 graduate of Westfield State College with a degree in elementary education. From 1938 to 1939, she was employed as a junior high school teacher in Newport, Vt. She returned to Westfield State College to obtain more credit in elementary education. She then returned to Newport and taught grades 1 through 4. She moved to Egremont in 1940 and was employed as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, teaching eight grades simultaneously. During World War II, she was a spotter for planes at the former Old Creamery. Mrs. Peck was a communicant of St. Peter's Church in Great Barrington. She was a Girl Scout leader in Springfield during her college years. She was a reader and family historian who enjoyed traveling, and especially enjoyed her trips to Ireland, Florida, Maine, Cape Cod and Colorado. She also enjoyed baking and writing letters. She and her husband, Milo Peck, whom she met at the Egremont Grange, were married Aug. 15, 1942, in Forest Park, Springfield. He predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1994. She leaves four daughters, Julia Reynolds, Shirley Montgomery and Loretta Curtiss, all of Egremont, and Kathleen Dennison of Sheffield; a son, Donald Peck of Egremont; a sister, Helen Hunt of Aurora, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Elizabeth A. Peck, who died Tuesday, May 23, 2006, will be held on Saturday, May 27, at 9 a.m. at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, with the Rev. Shaun O'Connor, M.I.C., pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Egremont. Family will receive friends on Friday, May 26, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy in Elizabeth's memory may be made to the Marian Fathers or to St. Peter's Ramp Fund in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230-1815. Mrs. Peck and her husband, Milo, celebrated their 50th anniversary with a party. She especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Higgins, and two brothers, Jeremiah J. and John Enright.
