Madeline E. Barbieri

Madeline E. Barbieri, 96, of 620 Laurel St., formerly of Glendale and Heaton Court in Stockbridge, died Wednesday evening at Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation. Born in Great Barrington on May 4, 1910, daughter of John and Elizabeth Keefner Baldauf, she attended local schools. Mrs. Barbieri was employed as a cook at the former Cove Restaurant and the Institute of Economic Research, both in Great Barrington, retiring several years ago. She was a member of the Glendale Fire Department, the Ladies Auxiliary, and she crocheted hats and mittens for Brightside of Springfield for many years. She also enjoyed fishing, cooking for family gatherings and gardening. Mrs. Barbieri had made her home in Glendale for many years and had resided at Heaton Court in Stockbridge for more than 20 years prior to moving to Laurel Lake Center six months ago. Her husband of many years, Peter Barbieri, died in 1959. Mrs. Barbieri leaves a son, Peter B. Barbieri of Richford, N.Y.; her granddaughter and caretaker of many years, Bonnie L. Morrison of Lee; five other grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Harriet M. Holmes, in 1983. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral and burial services for Mrs. Madeline Barbieri, who died Wednesday, May 24, 2006, will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Barbieri's memory may be made to the Lee Youth Association in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Kathy Barbieri; her grandchildren and their spouses, William B. Jr. Holmes (Deborah), Robert A. Holmes (Anne), Donald A. Holmes (Brandie), Steven Barbieri (Debra) and Jeff Barbieri; her sister-in-law, Angeline Baldauf, and son-in-law, William B. Holmes Sr. Mrs. Barbieri was predeceased by her two brothers, Joseph and Benjamin Baldauf; her grandson, Edward Morrison, and great-grandson, William B. Holmes III. For several years she enjoyed making stuffed dinosaurs and other stuffed animals out of old sweaters with her friend Crispina ffrench. Her special granddaughter Bonnie helped her maintain a happy and independent life. She loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed many gatherings "On the Hill" in Glendale. For the past 20 years, she enjoyed her independence, friends and card games at Heaton Court in Stockbridge. She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
