Dr. Edward Benjamin Gardner

Dr. Edward Benjamin Gardner, 86, of 600 Laurel St., a former longtime resident of Walker Street in Lenox, died June 27 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Cambridge on June 15, 1920, son of Edward and Sonia Himmelstein Ginsburg, he attended schools there and received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College in 1943 and his medical degree from Columbia University. He and his wife, psychologist and visual artist Elizabeth Barker Gardner, lived in Larchmont, N.Y., before moving to Lenox in the 1970s. Dr. Gardner was the psychiatric director at Berkshire Mental Health Center in Pittsfield, retiring in 1990. He played the violin in chamber groups and sang in choral groups, notably the Bach Society. He enjoyed taking walks throughout the Berkshires. He leaves a son, Jeffrey Gardner of Saquarema, Rio de Janiero, Brazil; two daughters, Cecily Gardner of Culver City, Calif., and Lisa Gardner of Gentilly, France; a stepdaughter, Mika Barker of Middlebury, Vt.; a stepson, Jeffrey Barker of Washington, D.C., and his former wife, Iljana Gardner of Culver City. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A service of remembrance celebrating the life of Edward B. Gardner, M.D., who died June 27, 2006, will be Saturday at 2 at 35 Greenwood St. (off Cliffwood Street, Lenox center). A private burial will be held Saturday morning at Mountain View Cemetery in Lenox. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pleasant Valley Bird Sanctuary in care of ROCHE FUNERAL HOME, 120 Main St., Lenox, MA 01240. He had a deep love for the Berkshires and was never more at home than when he was walking in his garden, on the Appalachian Trail or at Pleasant Valley Bird Sanctuary.
