Joseph S. George

Joseph S. George, 93, of Palm Bay, Fla., formerly of Adams died Wednesday at his home. Born in Adams on Sept. 2, 1912, son of Salem J. and Freda Shakar George, he attended Adams schools and graduated from the former Adams High School in 1931, where he lettered in football and track. He also graduated form the former Bliss Business College in North Adams. He moved to Stamford, Vt. in 1971 and to Florida in 1985. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as sergeant with a military police unit from Sept. 9, 1942, to Sept. 3, 1945. Mr. George owned and operated the Crystal Creamery for nearly 30 years, which was founded by his father in 1927. He was a communicant of St. Thomas Church. He was a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Adams Council 230, the Exalted Ruler of the Adams Lodge of Elks 1335 and a member of the Adams Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing during his earlier years. He was a member of the Forest Park Country Club and was a proficient bowler. His first wife, the former Cecelia M. Satko, whom he married Jan. 28, 1946, died June 17, 1980. Mr. George and his wife, Eugenie LeClair, were married July 16, 1990. Besides his wife, Mr. George leaves two daughters, Patricia A. Strzepek of Adams, and Susan George Cooksey of Chester, Ohio; a son, Emil J. George of Pittsfield; a sister, Elizabeth Mckdeci of Orlando, Fla; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A prayer service in the Roman Catholic tradition for Joseph S. George, who died Wednesday, July 5, 2006, will be offered Saturday, July 8, at noon from MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, with the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Roman Catholic Parish of Adams, officiating. Interment will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Donations in his memory may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital of Memphis, Tenn., through the funeral home, 6 Liberty St., Adams, MA 01220. He also leaves two sons-in-law, David and Jonathon. After retiring to Vermont, he worked on his woodland property where he made maple syrup which he proudly gave to anyone who stopped to say hello. He loved the art of playing cards and became an expert at bridge.
