Maryellen D. Lake

Maryellen D. Lake, 76, of 88 King Arthur Drive died Sunday at Laurel Lake Center in Lenox due to complications from a series of illnesses. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Aug. 29, 1929, daughter of Henry "Harry" and Amy Rice Dryer, she was raised in Terryville, Conn., and graduated Terryville High School in 1947. She later went on to secretarial school. She also attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. After serving in a series of secretarial jobs and as administrator of Bonny Rigg Camping Club, she decided to return to school. She earned an associate's degree from Berkshire Community College. Prior to that, she was a secretary to Hartford Courant Editor Herbert Brucker from 1955 to 1964. An amateur actress, she starred in such plays as "The Glass Menagerie," "Joan Of Lorraine" and "Separate Tables" with the New Britain Repertory Theater in Connecticut. She remained active in the theater until 1979. She was also an accomplished singer. In the past 10 years, she was active in town and national politics and served as clerk/treasurer of the Sherwood Forest Road District until April of this year. She married her husband, Kenneth W. Lake, in 1957. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Allison B. Lake of San Francisco and Kimberly Y. Lake of Becket. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A pot luck gathering to honor the memory of Maryellen D. Lake, who died Sunday, July 23, 2006, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Becket Town Hall.
